The Gertrude Jekyll® rose, bred by David Austin in 1986, is celebrated for its vivid pink rosettes and intensely rich Old Rose fragrance.
David Austin® is honoured to share that Gertrude Jekyll® (Ausbord) has been named the 2025 World’s Favourite Rose by the World Federation of Rose Societies (WFRS). The announcement was made at the 20th World Rose Convention in Fukuyama, Japan, on 19th May 2025, where rose enthusiasts from 40 member countries gathered.
Since its introduction at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 1986, Gertrude Jekyll® has exemplified the qualities of a classic English rose, combining rich fragrance, elegant form, and a timeless charm that reflects the spirit of the great garden designer after whom it is named.
The WFRS Hall of Fame was established in London in 1968 and recognizes exceptional roses through a ballot conducted among its member countries every 3 years. The first rose inducted was the cultivar ‘Peace’ in 1976. Since then, many outstanding roses have been honored, including David Austin’s Graham Thomas® (Ausmas) in 2009.
Derek Lawrence, Executive Director of the WFRS, commented:
“Gertrude Jekyll is an absolute gem and a worthy winner. Healthy, robust growth, with gorgeous pink blooms, which contain an exquisite and heavenly perfume.”David J.C. Austin, Chairman of David Austin® Roses, said:
“Gertrude Jekyll’s timeless beauty and fragrance have found a special place in the hearts of rose lovers everywhere, and we are truly honoured it has been named the world’s favourite rose.”
Gertrude Jekyll® is the 19th rose to receive this prestigious award, joining a distinguished group of roses that have inspired gardeners around the world for decades.
This rose reflects the timeless elegance and natural charm that Gertrude Jekyll herself championed in her gardens.
