JIHYO, of the critically acclaimed K-Pop powerhouse TWICE, released her first solo EP ZONE today via JYP Entertainment/Imperial/Republic Records, on all digital and streaming platforms.
This is JIHYO’s first solo venture since her debut with TWICE in October 2015. With ZONE, JIHYO is conveying her truest self, which is exemplified in the EP’s title track “Killin’ Me Good.” The up-tempo pop song captures JIHYO’s honest and natural emotions and her rich, rhythmic voice. For this track, JIHYO collaborated with prominent hit makers J.Y. Park, Marc Lo, Melanie Fontana, and Lindgren.
In addition to “Killin’ Me Good,” the seven-track mini album includes “Talkin’ About It (Feat. 24kGoldn),” a catchy, exciting dance-pop song (which also marks the first time TWICE and its members have featured a Western artist on one of their tracks); “Closer,” which explores the idea of being close to someone you just met through a sexy, Latin-inspired chorus; “Wishing On You,” a sparkling, passionate R&B track; “Don’t Wanna Go Back (Duet with Heize),” an acoustic, guitar-based song about heartbreak and a brutal breakup; “Room,” a lyrical, emotional track about locking everything away and never coming back; and “Nightmare,” which expresses JIHYO’s desire to become the nightmare to someone who hurt her.
Through ZONE, JIHYO uses the skills she’s honed through her training and the last eight years with TWICE to further highlight her musicality and growth as an artist. The EP features five tracks written by JIHYO – “Closer,” “Wishing On You,” “Don’t Wanna Go Back (Duet with Heize), “Room,” and “Nightmare” – and four tracks composed by JIHYO – “Talkin’ About It (Feat. 24kGoldn), “Don’t Wanna Go Back (Duet with Heize), “Room,” and “Nightmare.”
This solo release comes on the heels of what has already been a momentous year for JIHYO with TWICE. TWICE kicked off 2023 at the Billboard Women in Music Awards, where they were honored with the Breakthrough Award, then headed to New York to celebrate the release of their 12th mini album, READY TO BE, with a ceremonial lighting of the Empire State Building in partnership with Musicians On Call and a performance of title track “SET ME FREE” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The mini album was hailed by Rolling Stone as “as brash and compelling as anything in the pop music landscape today,” and entered the entered the Billboard 200 chart at #2. READY TO BE holds the biggest pure sales week for an album by a female K-Pop act in the U.S., and the debut extended TWICE’s record for the most top 10 debuts on the chart among all K-Pop female acts, now totaling four. The mini album also secured the #1 spot on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart – the group’s third number one placement on the chart.
Most recently, TWICE wrapped their 5th World Tour “READY TO BE.” The group played 13 shows in North America, beginning with a sold-out performance at Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium. This tour made TWICE the first female K-Pop girl group to play both SoFi Stadium and MetLife Stadium. The group also performed on TODAY’s Citi Concert Series in the iconic TODAY Plaza in New York City.
