Texas electricity comparison site Power Choice Texas analyzed US Energy Information Administration data to identify which states are hit hardest by commercial electricity bills, examining both the price per kilowatt-hour and the average amount of electricity businesses use monthly across the US.
Hawaii topped the list, with businesses spending an average of $1,514.34 each month on electricity. Companies on the island state pay more than three times the amount of those in Idaho, with businesses reporting average bills of just $411.43.
Hawaiian firms pay 39.03 cents per kilowatt-hour, far higher than any other state, though the island’s businesses use less power than most, at 3.88 MWh (monthly electricity sold per customer).
California placed second with businesses paying an average of $1,273.55 for electricity each month. Firms in the state use an average of 5.33 MWh each month.
Virginia came third at $1,246.92 in electricity bills. Although the state has one of the cheapest electricity rates at 8.95 cents per kilowatt-hour, it still places third as Virginia businesses use a huge 13.93 MWh each month – more than any other state.
Connecticut and Maryland complete the five costliest states, with bills reaching $1,212.15 and $1,104.14, respectively.
Tenth on the list, North Dakota businesses face $870.38 in monthly electricity bills despite low rates of 7.38 cents per kilowatt-hour. This is because the state’s businesses have the second-highest monthly power consumption at 11.79 MWh.
Texas, famous for its energy production, ranks 14th with monthly business electricity costs hitting $766.61 at 8.82 cents per kilowatt-hour.

«This study shows the massive difference in what companies pay for electricity across states, with business owners in Hawaii forking out nearly four times more than firms in Idaho, creating major gaps in operating costs.
