NEW ORLEANS
The New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) announced a new catalogue that features all 100 works in the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden.
Where Arts Meets Nature: The Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden, is published by Monacelli, an imprint of Phaidon. The book is available now exclusively from the NOMA Museum Shop and will be available in stores internationally beginning December 3.
NOMA unveiled the new volume on Thursday, November 7, during the Visionaries Gala Presented by First Horizon Bank, which brought together guests from around the world to celebrate 20 years of NOMA’s Besthoff Sculpture Garden.
“NOMA’s Besthoff Sculpture Garden is one of our city’s most important cultural destinations,” said Susan M. Taylor, The Montine McDaniel Freeman Director of NOMA. “We are delighted to partner with Monacelli and Phaidon to produce this beautiful and timely catalogue. The book’s contemporary design thoughtfully conveys the dynamic and contemporary experience of the garden.”
Consistently named one of the top sculpture gardens in the country, the Besthoff Sculpture Garden includes world-class work from the 19th century to the present day in a landscape unique to southern Louisiana. True to Sydney and Walda Besthoff’s vision for offering a space for New Orleanians to enjoy and experience public sculpture from international artists, NOMA’s Besthoff Sculpture Garden is free and open to the public seven days a week.
The works in the garden range from the 19th to the 21st centuries, with pieces by Auguste Rodin, Henry Moore, Louise Bourgeois, Ida Kohlmeyer, Claes Oldenburg, Sean Scully, Frank Stella, Maya Lin, Do Ho Suh, Ugo Rondinone, Wangechi Mutu, Hank Willis Thomas, and many others.
The 256-page, hardcover catalogue includes full-color pictures of every work in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden—including the latest additions by Sarah Sze, Elmgreen & Dragset, and Thomas J Price. It is the only book to present the full history of the 12-acre garden including the major expansion that doubled the size of the destination in 2019.
In addition to texts on every work installed in the garden, Where Art Meets Nature also includes a conversation between philanthropist and museum trustee Walda Besthoff and Susan M. Taylor, The Montine McDaniel Freeman Director of NOMA.
The worldwide release of Where Art Meets Nature closes out a year’s worth of programming celebrating 20 years of the Besthoff Sculpture Garden, which included three new permanent installations, a free fall festival in September 2024 that welcomed over 3,000 visitors, and the Visionaries Gala and Garden Party Presented by First Horizon Bank.
