The punk rock, femme duo CocoVera made up of Alejandra Robles Luna (Le Butcherettes, The Menstruators) and Janelle Leigh Obert (No Girlfriends, Stars at Night) release their new single, “These Walls” today and features synth by Rikardo Rodríguez-López (Le Butcherettes, Zechs Marquise) and guitars by Neko Gehr.
The single touches on mental illness, unity, hallucinations and highlights the dystopia of gentrification we are currently living in and features the haunting vocals of Mennel Alkhawaja (Little Treasure) who helps bring the songs message to life.
“These Walls” is accompanied by a new video created by Janelle and Alejandra during the pandemic. Under lockdown the duo built everything from the ground up at home, starting with painting cardboard boxes and repurposing their recyclables to transform into a structure to create the city in, These Walls. The buildings represent experiences from their childhoods, both negative and positive. The ¨city¨ is a combination of their feelings towards their hometowns of Monterrey, Mexico and Toledo, Ohio, as well as their adopted hometown, Los Angeles, CA.
The single is included in their sophomore album “All’s Well That Ends” that was released earlier this year. The title come from an absurdist take on the popular Shakespearian jargon: “All’s Well That Ends Well” and the duo’s take on everything will eventually end and enjoying life while you can make it possible.
During the pandemic CocoVera has been in the studio writing and will release a new EP in December for the holidays titled, “Pandemic Christmas” featuring some twists on classics and an original christmas song.
